A drop of water

I had hardly reached the ticket window when he grabbed me by the colar my shirt.

"Eh! Eh! What are you doing?" I protested in a low voice.

The man, who caught me, thinking me a thief, was not wrong at all, but I had not stolen anything from him!

"You don't remember me, Saheb?" Though his voice seemed to be known, his face wasn't familiar to me.

Till then I had freed myself from his hands and was standing by him. Taking a full breath, I said, "Saheb! Yes, yes, I remember. You are uncle ..."

He took my words to his account and finished it: "Right you are! I am Pilu Babu's son. You used to be my father's student. Remember that?"

To my curiosity and confusion, I could not but say "yes".

"Come with me. We have a lot to talk. You have not been seeing your only mother for the last thirty years." That man dragged my hands and started walking so fast that I almost had to run to avoid falling on the road.

We entered a hut a mile away from that place. An old woman, probably in her 90s and ill, was lying on a mat, torn and nasty.

Now the man spoke: "Masi ma, I have brought your Saheb. See, he is a grown man now with mustache and beard of a landlord."

A very low voice could be heard, since after the man had finished talking, I was amazed and disgusted with all these, kept my silence.

"Dear! My dear, Saheb! You have come after all these years to see your mother counting the last moments of her life in her bed." A very thin voice came out from the bed.

"Water! Water! Water!" The old torn voice rose again.

The man, from nowhere, took out a glass of water and handed me and pushed me towards the bed.

I didn't know what had got into me. "Ma, I have come back." Possibly the only thing I could speak then.
