Rather than taking steps to try to achieve his goal, Willy expects that his dream will come easily. Willy makes a series of bad decisions regarding his work and family, and in the end he cannot deal with the life that he has created for himself.

Although some outside factors do contribute to Willy's situation, Willy is largely responsible for having created his own destiny.
