Required Answer:

We are asked to write and balance the chemical equation for sodium metal reacts with water to form sodium hydroxide and hydrogen gas.

Firstly, all the formulae of reactants ( Sodium and water ) are written on the left side of the arrow and the formulae of products are written on the right side of the arrow.

Formulae of reactants-

  • Sodium → Na
  • Water →  \rm { H_2O}

Formulae of products -

  • Sodium hydroxide → NaOH
  • Hydrogen →  \rm { H_2}

So, the skeleton equation/unbalanced will be written as,

 \sf { Sodium + Water \longrightarrow Sodium Hydroxide + Hydrogen}

 \sf { Na + H_2O \longrightarrow NaOH + H_2}

( Unbalanced Equation )

Now we have to balance it,

We can see in above equation that on the left side, Na has one atom, O has one atom and H has two atoms atoms and on the right side, Na has one atom, O has one atom and H has three atoms.

So, here NaOH is multiplied by 2 to make even number of atoms of hydrogen.

 \sf { Na + H_2O \longrightarrow 2NaOH + H_2}

Now we'll multiply 2 by Na and H2O to equalize the number of atoms of each element on the both sides.

 \sf {2 Na + H_2O \longrightarrow 2NaOH + H_2}

Now, it is a balanced equation.

Additional Information:

How to balance chemical equations?

We can do it easily by following these steps-

  • At first, write all the reactants and products on the two sides of arrow ( left and right).

  • Then, count the number of atoms of various elements in the given equation.

  • And after that multiply the reactants and products by suitable numbers tk equalize the number of atoms on both the sides.
