QUESTIONS:

  • a) The sum of two rational numbers is -¾ . If one number is -28/3 the find the other

  • b) The sum of two rational numbers is -3 . If one of the numbers is 7/8 . Find the other

ANSWER:

a)sol:-

Given

  • Sum of two rational numbers is -¾
  • One of the number is -28/3

TO FIND:

Find the other number

Let the given rational numbers be x, y

Given x = -28/3

Then find y

→ x + y = -¾

→ -28/3 + y = -¾

→ y = -¾ + 28/3

→ y = 28/3 - 3/4

→ y = 28(4)/3(4) - 3(3)/4(3)

→ y = 112/12 - 9/12

→ y = 112-9/12 = 103/12

♦ y = 103/12

Hence , the other number is 103/12

VERIFICATION:

Substituting y = 103/12

In the given equation

x + y = -¾

Taking LHS

-28/3 + 103/12

→ -28(4)/3(4) + 103/12

→ - 112/12 + 103/12

→ -112 + 103/12

♦ -¾

LHS = RHS

Hence verified

b)sol:-

Given

  • Sum of two numbers is -3
  • One of the number is ⅞ then find the other

Let the two numbers be x , y

Given , x = ⅞

Then find y

→ x + y = - 3

→ ⅞ + y = -3

→ y = - ⅞ - 3

→ y = -7-24/8

→ y = -31/8

♦ y = -31/8

Hence , the other number is -31/8

VERIFICATION:

Substituting the value of y in the given equation

x + y = -3

→ ⅞ -31/8 = -3

Taking LHS

→ 7 - 31/8

→ - 24/8

-3

LHS = RHS

Hence verified
