political causes of revolt of 1857
General Service Enlistment Act : Thus act was passed by the British Parliament. According to this act the Indian soldiers could be sent overseas. But according to an accepted belief , it was considered a taboo for a Brahmin to cross the seas. So the General Service Enlistment Act disregarded the feelings of the Indian soldiers which lead to great resentment among them. This was one of the important military causes that led to the First War of National Independence.
Annexation of Oudh : Oudh was a foreign province. Most of the Bengal army consisted of soldiers from Oudh. Annexation of Oudh hurt the feelings if the people coming form that province. Nearly one third of the Bengal army consisted of soldiers drawn from Oudh thus forming a homogenous group within the army. Moreover, when Oudh was annexed, the soldiers were deprived of the extra pay or batta(which was the money paid to those soldiers who were on foreign service). So because of these reasons the army greatly resented the annexation of Oudh. This was also an important military cause that led to the outbreak of the Revolt of 1857.
Unequal treatment : The Indian and the British soldiers were not treated equally. The salaries of the Indian soldiers were too meagre to support thier families. While the duties of both Indian and British soldiers were similar, the British soldiers were paid eight times the salary than the Indian soldiers. Moreover the chances of promotion for an Indian soldier was very less as most of the posts int he army were reserved for the British. This was a very significant military cause that led to the outbreak of the First War of National Independence.
