SOME PROPERTIES OF ALKALI METALS :

ATOMIC AND IONIC RADII -

  • These have highest atomic radii in their respective periods due to least nuclear charge.
  • It increses down the group due to increase in no. of shells and screening effect.

IONISATION ENERGY :

  • They have low ionisation energy due to bigger atomic size.
  • It decreases down the group due to increase in atomic size and decrease in effective nuclear charge.

MELTING POINT AND BOILING POINT :

  • These have poor melting point and boiling point due to their poor strength of metallic bond.
  • Melting point and Boiling point decreases down the group with increase in size.

ELECTROPOSITIVE AND METALLIC CHARACTER :

  • These are highly electropositive and metallic in nature due to low ionization energy.
  • Electropositivity and metallic character increases down the group due to increase in ionization energy.

EXTRA POINTS :

☆ They have general valence shell electronic configuration \sf\blue{ {ns}^{1} }

☆ Alkali Metals consists of Lithium, Sodium, Potassium, Rubidium, Ceasium and Francium.

☆ Francium is the most reactive in this group.
