• Although the Indian Constitution grants fundamental rights to its citizens, the citizens in turn are expected to do certain things which are collectively known as Fundamental Duties.
• Fundamental duties have been incorporated in the Indian Constitution through the 42nd Amendment in 1976.
★ The ten fundamental duties are as follows -
• Abide by the Constitution and respect its ideals and institutions, the National Flag and the National Anthem.
• Cherish and follow the noble ideals that inspired our national struggle for independence.
• Uphold and protect the unity, sovereignty and integrity of India.
• Defend the country and render national service, if and when required.
• Promote harmony and the spirit of brotherhood amongst all citizens, irrespective of religious linguistic, regional and sectional diversities ; give up practices derogatory to the dignity of women.
• Value and preserve our cultural heritage.
• Protect and improve our natural environment including lakes, forests, rivers and wild life, have empathy for living creatures.
• Develop scientific temper, humanism, spirit of inquiry and reform.
• Safeguard public property and reject violence.
• Strive towards excellence in all areas of individual and collective activity, so that India as a nation scales to higher levels of endeavour and achievement.
• A parent or a guardian has to provide education to his child/ward between the age of 6-14 years
