The morning at the office was dull. Afternoon, pathetic. At eight , Ansela turned off her computer and piled up her files. She was half way down the building when she realized that she had forgotten her car keys at the desk, but that didn’t matter much. Today, she’d walk home.
The evening was just as dull as the morning. Winter was bidding goodbye to the northern part of the town and the winds signaled an impending storm. It took ten minutes more to reach home today and as Ansela turned on the lights, every inanimate object in the room seemed to welcome its owner. She helped herself with a cup of cappuccino and switched on the TV. Not more than thirty minutes had passed when her doorbell rang.
Racheal, her cheerful neighbor stood smiling at the doorstep. Without a word, Racheal dragged Ansela out of her house. It was not unusual. Racheal was of course, unpredictable. It didn’t take Ansela long to figure out that Racheal intended to take a walk in the park. Finally, Racheal’s startled voice broke the silence.
“I think I forgot my phone. I’ll be back in two minutes,” pointing to a bench, she mumbled, “you can go and sit there, I’ll be back soon.”
Ansela smiled in reply and started walking towards the bench. Racheal and her company was always her own brand of antidepressant. The bench was already occupied. Ansela felt relieved to have some temporary company before Racheal showed up but the sight of the elderly man sitting there startled her. His face was wrinkled as though the skin had lost all its elasticity. There was a ghostly edge to his appearance. His very presence silently spoke the tales of misery and fear. Not wishing to start a conversation with the stranger, Ansela looked up and stared at the starless sky.
“Go and open your cupboard…” whispered the stranger.
 “Sorry?”
“Go and open the cupboard. There’s a dead body kept in there.”
Ansela felt as if the very ground has started shaking. Without a word, she began running to her home. Her thoughts were a whirl and her mind felt disconnected to her body. She opened the door and rushed to the cupboard. Huge quantity of adrenaline had already choked her veins and her heart was ready to jump off from her chest any moment. After a minute’s hesitation, she opened the cupboard.
A gunny sack fell on her and knocked her to the ground and her entire body began shaking. She couldn’t muster up courage to see what lay beyond. Fifteen seconds had passed when her mind started working again. She needed to know what it really was and had to report it to the police. She took a deep breath and tore off the sack. A dreadful looking figure, very much humane, was staring back at her. After a second’s thought, realization crept in and she began laughing like a maniac and Racheal joined her too.
Etched on the chest of the dummy were the words “Happy April Fool’s day Ansela.”
