Answer:
1. Keeping families closer through sharing updates
I’ll start with the example that gave me the idea for this post. The technology of instant messaging has been disruptive. However, this usage falls into the “better place” category. This is about our sharing words, images, and video directly with people we care about.
Just the other day, out of the blue, my son sent me a picture of his cat Newton. It made me smile and made me appreciate my son. Seeing Newton made the world a better place.
2. Microloans through the internet
When I was a kid, helping people in developing nations was about donating to big charities. The impact was doubtful. Now, through organizations like Kiva, we can pool small donations into loans given to an individual or small groups that are trying to start or grow a business.
PADT has put $3,000 into the system over the past 12 years, money that has been loaned and loaned again to the order of $10,000 in loans to 121 different recipients in 54 countries. We like to think our little bit of capital has made the world a better place, all over the world.
3. Building new friendships through online gaming
A few years ago my younger son asked me if we would ever visit England again. I asked why, thinking he wanted to visit our cousins that live there. No, he wanted to go because he wanted to meet two kids he had met through online gaming. I know there are predators out there, but the vast majority of encounters I have seen through online gaming have been positive. I have seen kids meet people on different continents or just the next state over, and it has made their world better.
4. Wikipedia puts knowledge two clicks away
The fact that I can look up who the star is on an obscure British sitcom from 25 years ago makes me happy. Thanks to Wikipedia, I can get an answer to almost every question I have. Want to understand how impeachment works? Look it up. More knowledge always makes the world a better place.
5. Tools that let people experience things they never could before
All of the technological changes listed above are internet related. What about the physical tools we have now? One example is a hand mixer designed for small children to use, a tool that allows them to make a chocolate mousse with their dad. Or, maybe a modern pair of binoculars that lets someone see an owl perched on the limb of a tree, and then take a picture of it. A picture they can share with a friend they met while playing a game.
Technology can be used for bad. And, it can turn the world upside down. It can also enable small changes that make our lives just a little bit better. Maybe if we focus on the little things that make the world better, we can multiply the impact.
