Answer:

Properties of acids

Physical properties

They are sour to taste. Depending on the temperature, acids can occur in solid, liquid or gaseous form.

Chemical properties

They are proton donors

They have pH less than 7

They increase H+ ion concentration in solution

Acids neutralize bases producing a salt and water

Acids turn blue litmus to red

Acids react with active metals to produce hydrogen

E.g. of acids: HNO3 – nitric acid, HCl – hydrochloric acid, HC2H3O2 – acetic acid etc.

Properties of bases

Physical properties

They are bitter to taste and soapy to touch. Frequently they are solids except ammonia which is a gas.

Chemical Properties

They are proton acceptors

They have pH more than 7

They increase OH- ion concentration in solution

Bases neutralize acids producing a salt and water

Bases turn red litmus to blue

React with oils and greases (that's why they're used as drain and window cleaners)

E.g. of bases: LiOH, NaOH, KOH etc.
