Answer:

The five phases of matter. There are four natural states of matter: Solids, liquids, gases and plasma. The fifth state is the man-made Bose-Einstein condensation.

Solids :-

(a) The molecules in solids are very tightly packed having negligible or very less intermolecular space.

(b) They have the strongest intermolecular force of attraction.

(c) The molecules have very small vibration about their mean position i.e. small amplitude.

(d) They are generally hard and rigid.

(e) They have fixed shape and volume at a given temperature.

liquids:-

(a) Molecules are less tightly packed.

(b) The intermolecular force of attraction is less than that of solids.

(c) The molecules here can move from one place to another.

(d) Do not have any particular shape of their

(e) A particular quantity of a liquid has a definite volume at a given temperature.

Gases :-

(a) The force of attraction between the molecules is the least.

(b) The intermolecular space in the most.

(c) Neither has a definite shape nor volume.

(d) The molecules move independently.

(e) The worst conductors of heat.

There are three common states of matter:

  • Solids – relatively rigid, definite volume and shape. In a solid, the atoms and molecules are attached to each other. ...
  • Liquids – definite volume but able to change shape by flowing. In a liquid, the atoms and molecules are loosely bonded. ...
  • Gases – no definite volume or shape.
