All living organisms have characteristic form and structure. Life is a complex organisation of biological molecules that are involved in the chemical reactions inorder to carry out specific functions such as growth, adaptation, reproduction etc.
- The major features of living Organisms are:-
- Growth: Growth refers to an individual's rise in bulk, which is an inevitable process.
- Reproduction: Reproduction is the process of creating new individuals from pre-existing ones. The maintenance of a population necessitates reproduction. Sexual or asexual reproduction are both possible.
- Cellular structure: Every living organism is made up of one or more cells. It is the fundamental unit of hierarchy of organisation in all lifeforms.
- Metabolism: The body of living creatures undergoes a variety of chemical reactions. Metabolism is the sum total of all of these reactions. The two forms of metabolism are present:- catabolism and anabolism. Anabolism is the process of forming complex molecules or substances from simpler ones. Catabolism is the process of breaking down complex compounds into simpler ones.
- Respond to Stimuli: Living beings are conscious of their surroundings and are capable of responding to stimuli. This is simply called the consciousness.
- Energy: Energy is necessary for creatures in order to survive.
- Homeostasis: It is the ability of living beings to retain a constant internal state despite changes in their external environment.
