An emission spectrum shows the spectral lines of light that an element is able to release. A photon of specific wavelength is emitted when an electron moves from a higher energy level to a lower one.
An absorption spectrum shows the opposite effect. A photon with just the right amount of energy (a specific wavelength) contacts an electron, it excites the electron to a higher energy state. The specific wavelengths of light that can be absorbed make the absorption spectrum.
