The most characteristic features of the Himalayas are their soaring heights, steep-sided jagged peaks, valley and alpine glaciers often of stupendous size, topography deeply cut by erosion, seemingly unfathomable river gorges, complex geologic structure, and series of elevational belts (or zones) that display different

(i) The Himalayas, geologically young and structurally fold mountains, stretch over the northern borders of India.

(ii) These mountain ranges run in a west-east direction from the Indus to the Brahmaputra.

(iii) The Himalayas represent the loftiest and one of the most rugged mountain barriers of the world.

(iv) They form an arc which covers a distance of about 2,400 km. Their width varies from 400 km in Kashmir to 150 km in Arunachal Pradesh

In general there are total 17 Indian States that are located on the international border. These 17 Indian states shares their boundary with one, two or three countries. These Indian states in order from East to West are Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya in north east; Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Sikkim in northern planes; Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand in extreme north; Rajasthan and Gujarat in west.

The maximum number of International boundaries shared by any Indian State is three (3 only). In other words there are only maximum three neighbouring countries for some particular Indian States. These states are-

Sikkim(share border with China,Nepal,Bhutan).

West Bengal(Bhutan,Nepal,Bangladesh).

Arunachal Pradesh(China, Bhutan, Myanmar).

Jammu & Kashmir(Pakistan, China, Afghanistan[POK]).

Indian States which shares international border with Pakistan – Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir (4 states share their borders with Pakistan.

Indian States which shares international border with China – Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh (5 states borders with China)

Indian States which shares international border with Nepal – Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim (5 Indian states shares its border with Nepal)
