Prior to British rule in India many social evils prevailed in the society.

Some of them were

• Sati System : As per this inhumane system a widow was burnt alive with the burning corpse of her husband . This was one of the worst time our Indian women faced .
• Dowry system: It still prevails in many parts of our country. As per this system the in laws of the lady demanded expensive gifts and money from other side .
• Purdah System : The woman has to cover her face by a veil.
• Domestic violence : Woman was physically tortured.
