The maru raikas mainly lived in Thar desert near Jaisalmer and their settlement is known as 'dhandi'. There is a group called Raikas, mainly known as the Maru Raikas, herded camels and another group reared sheep and goat. Maru means desert.

The Dhangars were an important pastoral community of Maharashtra. They were mostly shepherds, some were blanket weavers and others were buffalo herders. They were continuously on the move because: (i) Need for search of new pastures for their cattle.
