The Broadcasting Code was adopted at the 4th Asian Broadcasting Conference in 1962 and contained specific rules that electronic media must follow.
The principles or conventions related to code are:
- Broadcast media must ensure an objective presentation of news with fair and unbiased commentary.
- Media must promote education and culture.
- Establish and maintain high standards of civility and propriety in all programs.
- Maintaining and promoting communal harmony, religious tolerance and international relations.
- The media must give fair treatment to controversial public issues.
- Media should respect human rights and dignity.
The Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995 generally regulates the functioning of cable television throughout India, governing subscription fees and the total number of subscribers receiving programming transmitted on the base layer. Pursuant to the Cable Television Networks (Regulations) (Amendment) Bill 2002, the Central Government shall require all pay-channel programming to be transmitted or retransmitted via an addressable system if so advised by the Central Government.
It can be requested from the cable network operator. Such notice may also specify the number of free-to-air channels that make up the basic level of service.
