1.) HCl + H2O(l) - H3O+(aq) + Cl−(aq)
2.) H2O(l) + NH2−(aq) - OH−(aq) + NH3(aq)

In Ist case : water molecule will accept a proton and act as a Bronsted-Lowry base.
In IInd case : water molecule will donate a proton and thus act as a Bronsted-Lowry acid.
