Answer:
What are chromosomes? Explain how in sexually reproducing organisms the number of chromosomes in the progeny is maintained.
answer....
Chromosomes are the thread like structures having DNA and associated proteins. They transfer hereditary characters to offsprings. Sexual reproduction includes via meiosis and random fertilization of male and female gametes. Meiosis reduces the chromosome number to half in gametes and fertilization restores the somatic chromosome number in the zygote.
Explain how offspring of parents in sexual reproduction have the same number of chromosomes.
answer....
In sexual reproduction, when two gametes fused together it results in the formation of a zygote that gives rise to a new individual. Each gamete has 23 (n=Haploid) chromosomes that mean half the number of chromosomes in a parent cell (diploid 2n=46 chromosomes). When these haploid gametes fuse to form a zygote, the zygote will have 23+23= 46 chromosomes which are equal to the number of chromosomes in the parent cell. Hence both the parents and offspring have the equal number of chromosomes.
