Difference between conductors, insulators and semiconductors is given below.

Explanation:

Conductors:

  • The valence band is completely filled and conduction and have two possibilities either.
  • It is partially filled and has extremely small energy gap between valence and conduction band.
  • Conductors can conduct electricity on applying small electric filed.

Insulators:

  • The energy gap between conduction and valance band is very large.
  • When electric filed is applied the electrons find it difficult to get the energy.
  • Conduction band continues to be empty.
  • That is why no current flows through insulators.

Semiconductor:

  • The energy band structure of semiconductor is similar to insulators.
  • Energy gap is much smaller.
  • Its conductivity lies between insulation and conduction band.
