Difference between conductors, insulators and semiconductors is given below.
Explanation:
Conductors:
- The valence band is completely filled and conduction and have two possibilities either.
- It is partially filled and has extremely small energy gap between valence and conduction band.
- Conductors can conduct electricity on applying small electric filed.
Insulators:
- The energy gap between conduction and valance band is very large.
- When electric filed is applied the electrons find it difficult to get the energy.
- Conduction band continues to be empty.
- That is why no current flows through insulators.
Semiconductor:
- The energy band structure of semiconductor is similar to insulators.
- Energy gap is much smaller.
- Its conductivity lies between insulation and conduction band.
