Consequently, they tend to lose electrons and form cations. Conversely, most nonmetallic atoms attract electrons more strongly than metallic atoms, and so gain electrons to form anions.

...

Cation vs anion chart.

Cation Anion

Examples Sodium (Na+), Iron (Fe2+), Ammonium (NH4+) Chloride (Cl-), Bromide (Br-), Sulfate (SO42-)

Answer:

The compounds formed due to the attraction of electropositive and electronegative charges are called Ionic Compounds. In these compounds the cation gives away electrons and the anion gain those electrons.

For example:

1. Sodium Chloride (NaCl)

Since sodium has one valent electron in its outermost shell it loses one electron and becomes postive in nature whereas chlorine has 7 electrons in its outermost shell and therefore it gains the electron lost by sodium and becomes electronegative. Therefore a force of attraction is developed between the two and they form and ionic compound.

2. Calcium Chloride (CaCl²)

since sodium has 2 electrons in its outermost shell it loses the two electrons and becomes positive in nature where is chlorine has 7 electrons in its outermost shell and the two atoms of chlorine take one electron each that is lost by calcium and become electronegative in nature. Here calcium is the cation and chlorine is the anion.
