Answer:There isn't any scientific formula as such to appreciate a poem like in Science. In literature, it's completely theoretical, hence, the opinions vary. Actually the poems are supposed to be 'felt' rather than appreciated. Many critics have different theories of their own about how to judge a poem and how to think over it critically. Wordsworth stresses on the concept of beauty in a poem whereas Eliot makes it practical through his approach. Therefore, the appreciation vary from person to person and critic to critic.

However, it is expected that a student or a critic of poetry should consider following points to bring out the critical appreciation of a poem. This could very well be the format. Have a look at the points mentioned below:

(1) Poet's background,

(2) Reference to the time/era of the poem and the poet,

(3) The specific era's features/specialty with reference to its poetry,

(4) Theme of the poem,

(5) Metrical composition of the poem such as it's rhyme, rhythm, meter: the scansion, and figures of speech used by the poet in his composition,

(6) and finally, the impact the poem produces on the reader through its musical qualities.

This way we can appreciate poetry.
