Properties of elements, on moving from left to right in a period, in the Modern Periodic Table: (a) Variation in valency: Valency of elements with respect to hydrogen increases arithmetically from 1 to 4 and back to 1. (b) Atomic radius: The atomic radius decreases on moving from left to right in a period. (c) Metallic and Non-metallic Properties: As the effective nuclear charge increases across the period, the tendency to lose the electrons will decrease. So, the metallic character decreases across the period. (d) Nature of oxides: Oxides of elements in a period become progressively less basic and finally change to the acidic character.
