Students can play a very important role in removing illiteracy as they have plenty of time .In summer vacations they can devote a couple of hours to teach the illiterates in localities or villages near their residences. They can awaken the illiterates in living skills, proper hygiene, childcare and nutrition. Also they can remove very much the social evils from mind of illiterates like blind faith in superstitions, religious bigotry, communalism and narrow –mindedness.

Students can stage street plays that reveal the hollowness of various beliefs of the illiterates .They can taught about the importance of being illiterate .They can access various schemes of the government for their uplift and growth .Best of all ,through literacy, the illiterate can stop be cheated by unscrupulous and crafty people. However, they can render it better with the help of educational institutes, National Literacy Mission, NGOs and social groups

Students Role In Removing Illiteracy

 

Students are the best hope of mankind. If any future goals of success, prosperity, peace, and safety are to be accomplished, their participation is a must. Similarly, if a country wants to achieve the goal of 100% literacy, it will have to involve the students in the literacy programmes. Each one teach one programme can really be very helpful in this regard.  Each one teach one is a famous historical proverb that originated in America before the declaration of the Emancipation Declaration. The black people did not have privileges to education. Thus, this campaign ‘each one teach one’ was launched to educate the colored people. The few educated black people taught as many uneducated people as was possible. Afterwards, this phrase was used in many countries to sensitize people to spread literacy and education.

In India, also this campaign was launched to achieve goals of 100 % literacy, especially among the adults. This campaign is still running in many backward areas. India is a fast developing country with the ambition of becoming a fully developed country as soon as possible. This ambition can only be fulfilled in the condition of 100 % literacy. India is a densely populated country. A majority of people live in villages where education is not given much importance. Already there are adults who are uneducated. Unless they are educated, the mission of achieving total literacy cannot be achieved. Thus adult litearcy education is very important. 

These illiterate adults can contribute to the nation building by being literate in a far better manner. Indian Government has taken quite a few initiatives to promote adult education. Open schools, skill development programmes, each one teach one literacy drive, etc. are a few of them.  Since India is a fast developing country, much of the funds are spent on creating infrastructure. Including students in the literacy programmes saves the nation much cost that it would have to bear if full-fledged schools were to be opened for educating the illiterate people. So, students are the best bet in removing illiteracy from a nation.
