Although the habitual comforts brought relief to users, it also came with major consequences like health issues, and financial burdens that may often be draining to addicted users, especially those in developing countries, such as India. This essay is a brief summary of the article Ban on Tobacco Ads by the Government of India. Some key points of discussion will include the pro and con perspectives for tobacco ban ads, conflict of interest that India may face, and lastly, my personal opinion on what the Indian government should do in regards to tobacco advertising.

A fair argument that opposing views pointed out include the fact that India is the world’s third largest producer of tobacco, therefore “if it was legal to manufacture and sell tobacco products, it should be legal to advertise it as well” (Ban on Tobacco Ads by the Government of India, 2001). Similar to other products on the market, adult smokers who continue to consume tobacco products are well aware of their decision, and that an implementation of the ban would impede on the personal rights of India’s citizens. The author provided further analysis of this opposing view by citing various studies and surveys around the world, which all seem to conclude that tobacco ban ads would not be effective, or that there is no correlation between advertisement and its influence on people’s decision to smoke (Ban on Tobacco Ads by the Government of India, 2001).
In addition to the strong argument around India’s tobacco ad ban, the government must also address the dilemma of conflict of interest.
