Actually, there is a lot of difference in repeater and router.
You router can work as repeater, however, your repeater cannot work as router.
Router is used to connect to internet, while repeater is used to repeat the signals received by router and send to repeater to amplify/repeat.
Repeater may be or may not be able to connect to internet directly.
For Example : I want to get internet connection to my home, I’ll use router to connect and authenticate with my ISP and use it on my devices through WiFi.
Suppose, my WiFi range/network is not reachable in my last(farthest) room of 3BHK apartment, then I can use repeater to repeat the signals coming from my router, so that it can easily reach my farthest room.
