Solution:

The reaction of dilute sulphuric acid with sodium sulphite is a two step reaction.

In the 1st step Sulphuric acid reacts with Sodium Sulphite to produce Sodium sulphate and Sulphurous acid.

The Sulphurous acid formed is highly unstable.

So, it decomposes into Sulphur dioxide and water in the 2nd step spontaneously.

Step 1:

H_{2} SO{4} + Na_{2} SO_{3} \rightarrow   Na_{2} SO_{4} + H_{2} SO{3}

This is a double - displacement reaction.

Step 2:

H_{2} SO{3} \rightarrow SO_{2} + H_{2}O
