The reaction is exothermic. During the reaction, the sodium metal may well become so hot that it catches fire and burns with a characteristic orange colour. The reaction​ involved is

The evolved hydrogen gas can be detected by bringing a light matchstick near the mouth of the test tube,the hydrogen gas will start burning with a pop sound.
