(i) When ethanol ( CHCHOH ) is reacted with sodium metal ( Na ) , sodium ethoxide ( CHCHONa ) is formed .
2 CHCHOH + 2 Na → 2 CHCHONa + H
(ii) When phenol ( CHOH ) is reacted with Zn dust in heating conditions , phenol is converted into benzene ( CH ) .
CHOH + Zn → CH + ZnO
- Sodium ethoxide is a white solid . Its molar mass is 68.05 g/mol .
- Benzene is used to make plastics, synthetic fibers , and resins .
