Different things have different criteria for classification.

For example, plants are classified on the basis of genetic and evolutionary relationship where as animals are classified on the basis of vertebrates or non vertebrates. Similarly, industries can be classified on the basis of raw material/ownership etc. In chemistry, elements are classified on the basis of atomic number and mass.
