Operation Barga was a land reform movement throughout rural West Bengal for recording the names of sharecroppers (bargadars) while avoiding the time-consuming method of recording through the settlement machinery. ... Operation Barga was launched in 1978 and concluded by the mid-1980s.

Operation Barga' (OB) was initiated by the West Bengal government in 1978 as a comprehensive program to address the reforms on the sharecropping system which was employed throughout the state and comprises 20–25% of all farms. The OB had raised high hopes among the peasantry.
