Democracy in Chile:

Democracy in Chile has been removed and returned several times.

Democracy in Chile came to an end when Salvador Allende deliberately ceased complying with the laws and the Constitution and developed militarized paramilitary military forces. Congress as well as the Supreme Court both proclaimed his rule unjust and illegal and called on the military to re-establish the rule of law.

In a war that cost about 3000 lives on both sides, the armed forces struck Allende down on September 11, 1973. The military then stopped Congress and the Constitution and established a temporary government that ended much longer than anybody had expected.

On 11 Sept 1980, a new Constitution was established providing for an armed-driven transitional government that would last until 11 March 1990. Patricio Aylwin was elected President and Congress after the popular elections in 1990. The Constitution has been amended many times ever since, but still remains in place today.
