Tribes (non-Aryans )", inspite of their originally dist-
inct physical and cultural characteristics, discussed in the
foregoing chapters, have not been able to maintain their separate
individuality for a long time, because of their impact with the.

social and cultural status by seeking admission into the Aryan

venience wanted to admit this tribal people into the Hindu
fold as menials and' cultivators forming a fourth caste (Sudras )
and even at a somewhat lotser state as a fifth caste (e <g* in the

were also conveniently utilized for this purpose* In this
process of absorption of the tribal people in the Hindu social
system there was naturally a considerable give and take between
the two. Many crude religious rites and practices, superstitions,
and unwholesome habits found their way into the Hindu society
from that of the tribal people.
