Answer:

The dominant vegetation types are grassy prairie and grass steppe in which numerous species of the grass genus Stipa are particularly conspicuous.

Pampas grass" is an iconic species of the Pampas. Vegetation typically includes perennial grasses and herbs. Different strata of grasses occur because of gradients of water availability.

The World Wildlife Fund divides the Pampas into three distinct ecoregions. The Uruguayan Savanna lies east of the Parana River, and includes all of Uruguay, most of Entre Ríos and Corrientes provinces in Argentina, and the southern portion of Brazil's state of Rio Grande do Sul. The Humid Pampas include eastern Buenos Aires Province, and southern Entre Ríos Province. The Semiarid Pampas includes western Buenos Aires Province and adjacent portions of Santa Fe, Córdoba, and La Pampa provinces. The Pampas are bounded by the drier Argentine espinal grasslands, which form a semicircle around the north, west, and south of the Humid Pampas.

The Pampas region of Argentina receives low rainfall. It cannot support dense forests but favours the growth of thick grasses in the region. The grasses appear different in different seasons. In spring, they look fresh and pale green. They continue to look the same till summer. They gradually dry up and look yellow or light brown by autumn. In winter, the shoots of the grasses dry completely but the roots remain alive. Fresh green shoots grow out of the soil again in spring and the cycle repeats. The exterior soil of the Pampas is deep black. It is principally humus, commonly known as manure. It is suitable for the growth of the most common grass found in the Pampas known as alfalfa. It is a lush green and rich grass, which is used as fodder for cows and sheep. It can be cut and used several times a year as it grows very fast. Originally, Pampas virtually had no trees because fires occurred frequently in it. The fires did not kill the grass but destroyed the trees. Today, some imported species like the American sycamore or eucalyptus are found along the roads or in towns and country estates. The only tree-like plant native to Pampas is Ombu which is an evergreen plant and is adapted to protect itself from fires.
