Thank you for this question.
The war of 1857, called the war of Independence in India and the Indian Mutiny, devastated many societies and regions in the sub-continent.
It led to the execution of numerous mughal kings and the last mughal king being expelled to Burma.
The British punished the uprising by merciless killing of thousands of Muslims and even Hindus who had collaborated.
Before 1857, the British were seen as a major power on the subcontinent, but after 1857, they were seen as ruthless occupiers which eventually gave rise to nationalism and a long struggle.

The revolt of 1857 had it's core dug deep into attack on the very religious conscience of the then unmade and compromising Indians. Enough administrative and economic downs mostly had already pushed the Indians into the Wells of hellish tyranny. The Indians wanted to master themselves and they wanted to have the prosperity of their country given up no more. Sepoy mutiny also rose up to get the Britishers out of the very nation they had scarred for so many years and therefore a nationwide nationalism inflicted violent protest was disbursed by the Indians.
