It led to the execution of numerous mughal kings and the last mughal king being expelled to Burma.
The British punished the uprising by merciless killing of thousands of Muslims and even Hindus who had collaborated.
Before 1857, the British were seen as a major power on the subcontinent, but after 1857, they were seen as ruthless occupiers which eventually gave rise to nationalism and a long struggle.
