Answer:

Four ashramas were recognised: brahmacharya, grihastha, vanaprasttw and samnyasa. Brahmin, kshatriya and vaishya men were expected to lead simple lives and study the Vedas during the early years of their life (brahmacharya). Then they had to marry and live as householders (grihastha).

The four ashramas that man had to go through were
1) Brahamacharya Ashrama- Here a child about 8-9 years of age would go live in a Gurukul and study from a guru till he was 25.
2) Grihasta Ashrama- Here a man would get married and build a home for his family. He would use the skills that he learnt in the Gurukul to earn a living. He would fulfil his duties as a father, husband and son.
3) Vanaprastha Ashrama- Here a man would leave his family and other worldly desires to go to the forest where he would meditate.
4) Sanyasa Ashrama- Here man would devotedly meditate for days forgetting about all worldly attachments and work on attaining moksha

Hope it helps!!!
