Thegrowth of new professions gave rise to a large number of sub castes each calleda Jati. A jati consisted of peoplewho were in the same profession. Prominent among the jatis that emerged werethe Kayasthas- a sub caste ofscribes. The Kayasthas rose to importance because record keeping had become animportant profession. The jatis had their own rules and regulationsadministrated by the elders.
