"Three Men in a Boat" is a story of three men who set out in a short holiday up the river Thames. They take their dog also with them. This dog is named Montmorency. He is a small fox terrier. He is a constant companion of the three men during the trip. He makes his presence felt everywhere. His behaviour and actions also contribute to the humour of the novel.
Montmorency is quarrelsome by nature. the author narrates the incident in which a fox-terrier creates a riot. therefore, he excuses the fighting nature of Montmorency who is also a fox terrier. In fact Montmorency's idea of life is to hang about a stable, and collect a gang of most disreputable dogs to be found in the town and lead them around the slums to fight other disreputable dogs. At oxford he fights on the first day and fourteen fights on the second day.
He likes something noisy and does not revel in romantic solitude. That is why he is against the idea of boat-trip. He never cares for the river. But Montmorency never disapproves of a thing violently. There is always a noble expression on his face. The author calls him"an angel sent upon the earth". At times he is a coward. Once he runs after a cat at a big speed, but the cat moves slowly. It turns round and sits in the middle of the road. Montmorency looks at her with gentle expression. Then he comes back to the three men.
Thus Montmoreny is as important a character as the thre friends.

Montmorency was a small fox terrier who plays an important pary in the novel Three men in a boat. He was one of the companions of the three friends who went on the boat. Because of the presence of dog, the novel realizes some humour and funny part such as his fights with cats.

He makes many humorous actions which creates funny incidents in the novel. He was a dog with the fighting nature. His motive was to fight with the other dogs along with some of his friends. At Oxford also he had eleven fights with dogs on first day and twelve fights on second day.

He has been called as "an angel sent on earth" by narrator because of his actions and presence in the novel. An incident dates back to his action when he saw a cat and came back to the narrator and his friends.
