Answer:

The Lost Child by Mulk Raj Anand is a poignant story of a little child who gets lost in the spring  fair. The ecstasy of seeing new things converting into the trauma of finding himself lonely in the  teeming crowd has been described in detail in this very famous story , and leaves a deep impact  on the mind of the readers. The child whose character is the only one described in detail  effectively conveys the joys and sorrows of childhood.

Dressed in a yellow turban and neat clothes, the child is very young and can reach only till his  father’s legs. He is brimming with life and laughter, and keeps running after things that catch  his attention. His childhood is characterized by his impatience and his tendency to be easily  distracted – his turning for every new thing from toys to dragon flies, to the doves and the wild  capers- all testimony to his keen observant eyes and childhood curiosity.

The child is tempted to buy various things in the fair but is also scared of his parents’ reaction.  His knowledge of their potential answers again stresses how children are only thought to be  ignorant but actually have a far deep sense of people and their attitudes. He is obedient to  their calls and views and follows them diligently. Nonetheless he is an insistent child who  finally makes the bold request to go to the roundabout, only to realize that he is lost and  subsequently the love that he harbours for his parents.

But one cannot take his innocence to be his meekness. On realizing that he’s lost he shows  great presence of mind by going towards the shrine where many people go in the fair. Also his  filmy eyes look for his parents where the people seem to be in great numbers. He goes on to  take a bold decision of going through the jostling crowd to find the real love of his life – his  parents. Through his character, Anand takes home the point that no one can replace the love  and importance of parents in a child’s life.
