Characteristics of Monera:

  • They are unicellular and prokaryotic organisms.

  • They are devoid of nuclear membrane, nucleolus, chromatin and histone properties.

  • The genetic material is present in cytoplasm and is called Nucleoid.

  • Cell wall is made up of Peptidoglycan (Amino acids + sugar).

  • It doesn't have any membrane bound cell organelles.

  • It only has Ribosomes as a cell organelle, which is of 70S type (50S large sub unit & 30S small sub unit).

  • They exhibit both Autotrophic and Heterotrophic nutrition (Mostly heterotrophic).

  • They perform Asexual reproduction.

  • They commonly reproduce by Binary fission (Asexual reproduction).

  • Respiratory enzyme is associated with mesosome which is attached with plasma membrane.

  • They are two types of monerans i.e Archaebacteria and Eubacteria.

Examples of Monera:

Cyanobacteria, Mycoplasma, Blue green algae, Methanococcus. etc.
