Characteristics of Monera:
- They are unicellular and prokaryotic organisms.
- They are devoid of nuclear membrane, nucleolus, chromatin and histone properties.
- The genetic material is present in cytoplasm and is called Nucleoid.
- Cell wall is made up of Peptidoglycan (Amino acids + sugar).
- It doesn't have any membrane bound cell organelles.
- It only has Ribosomes as a cell organelle, which is of 70S type (50S large sub unit & 30S small sub unit).
- They exhibit both Autotrophic and Heterotrophic nutrition (Mostly heterotrophic).
- They perform Asexual reproduction.
- They commonly reproduce by Binary fission (Asexual reproduction).
- Respiratory enzyme is associated with mesosome which is attached with plasma membrane.
- They are two types of monerans i.e Archaebacteria and Eubacteria.
Examples of Monera:
Cyanobacteria, Mycoplasma, Blue green algae, Methanococcus. etc.
