Characteristics of a homologous series:-
- Each member of the series differs from the preceding one by the addition of CH2 group and by molecular mass of 14a.m.u.
- All members of a homologous series share the general formula...For example,the general formula for alkane is Cn H2n+2,alkene is Gn H2n,alkyne is Cn H2n-2.
- The physical properties of the members change gradually I.e.show gradation in properties as the number of carbon atoms per molecules increases,I.e.,as molecular mass increases.
- Members of a homologous series have similar chemical properties. For example : Methane reacts with chloride to form methyl chloride. CH4+Cl2------>CH3Cl+HCl(Methane reacts with chloride to form methyl chloride. C2H6+Cl2-------->C2H5Cl+HCl.
- All the members of homologous series can be prepared by using the same general method of preparation.
- For example :
Alcohols are prepared by alkyl halides.
CH3Br+KOH------->CH3OH+KBr.
C2H5Br+KOH------->C2H5OH+KBr.
