Write chemical reactions for the following observations (balanced
chemical equations).
(a) Sodium carbonate reacts with sulphuric acid to form the
products. When this reaction takes place, brisk effervescence
is produced
(b) When chlorine gas is passed through slaked lime, a substance
is produced which is used in paper industry for bleaching
wood pulp

Answer:

(a) When dilute HCl, which is an acid, added to sodium carbonate, a strong base, the neutralization reaction occurs by the formation of NaCl and the evolution of carbon dioxide gas by brisk effervescence.

2HCl+Na 2 CO 3 ⟶2NaCl+CO 2 +H2O

(b)When chlorine gas is passed over the dry slaked lime then CalciumOxychloride is formed. That is the bleaching powder. 1) It Is used as an oxidising agent. 2) It is used in cotton textile industries to bleach linen and cotton and also in paper industries to bleach wood pulp.
