Iron, Magnesium and Calcium liberate hydrogen when treated with HCl or H2SO4 and form the respective salts.

Explanation:

When Fe reacts with HCl, then FeCl2 is formed liberating hydrogen.

  • Fe + HCl →  FeCl2 + H2

When Fe reacts with H2SO4, Fe2(SO4)3 is formed liberating H2.

  • Fe + H2SO4 → Fe2(SO4)3 + H2

Similarly Mg and Ca react with the acids as follows:

  • Mg + 2 HCl → MgCl2 + H2
  • Mg + H 2SO 4 → MgSO4 + H2
  • Ca + HCl → CaCl2 + H2
  • Ca + H2SO4 → CaSO4 + H2
