1) The salts made up by the reaction of strong acid and strong base are called neutral salts.
For example, NaCl which is formed by the reaction of a strong base NaOH and a strong acid HCl. Thus NaCl solution has a pH of 7.
Similarly K2SO4 solution also has a pH of 7 since it is formed from a strong acid H2SO4 and a strong base KOH.
2)The salts made up by the reaction of strong acid and weak base are called acidic salt.
For example , Ammonium nitrate(NH4NO3) solution is made up of strong acid HNO3 and weak base ammonium NH4OH thus aqueous solution of ammonium nitrate is acidic and has a pH less than 7.
3) The salts made up by the reaction of a strong base and weak acid are called alkaline salts.
For example , Sodium acetate (CH3COONa) solution is made up of strong base NaOH and weak acid CH3COOH thus aqueous solution of Sodium acetate is alkaline and has a pH greater than 7.
CLASSIFICATION OF SALTS :
Salts are classified as Neutral , Acidic and Basic.
❊ NEUTRAL SALTS :
Salts, formed by the reaction of a strong acid with a strong base, are Neutral salts. Solution of a neutral salt in water is neutral, that is, it is neither acidic nor basic. Hence, such a salt solution does not change the colour of the litmus paper.
Sodium Chloride (NaCl) is a neutral salt as it is formed by the reaction of strong acid (HCL) and strong base (NaOH). KCl , KNO3 , Na2SO4 is some other examples of neutral salts.
❊ ACIDIC SALTS :
Salts , formed by the reaction of strong acid and weak base are called as Acidic salts. Solution of an acidic salt in water is acidic , that is, it would change the colour of blue litmus paper to red.
Aluminum Chloride (AlCl3) is an acidic salt as it is found by the reaction of strong acid (HCl) and weak base (Al (OH)3). NH4NO3 is some other examples of acidic salts.
❊ BASIC SALTS :
Salts , formed by the reaction of a weak bases and strong base are basic salt. Solution of a basic salt in water is basic, that is, it changes the colour of red litmus paper to blue.
Sodium Acetate (CH3COONa) is a basic salt as it is formed by the reaction of a weak acid (CH3COOH) and a strong base (NaOH). CH3COOK is some other examples of basic salts.
