A N S W E R :

In general terms, an " Active site " can simply be defined as a part of the specific 3 - dimensional structure of an anzyme.

E X T R A I N F O R M A T I O N :

  • An anzyme may consist of more than on active site.

  • The active sites of most of the enzymes are located at the points which are very close to the surface of the enzyme.

  • The active site serves a " Lock " into which the reactant substrate gets bound as a " Key ", leading to the formation of an " Enzyme - Substrate " (ES) complex.

  • The points on the surface of the enzyme where the substrate gets bound of the active site, is known as the " Substrate binding site ".

The active site is region of an enzyme where substrate molecules bind and undergo a chemical reaction. The active site consists of amino acid residues that form temporary bonds with the substrate (binding site) and residues that catalyse a reaction of that substrate (catalytic site).
