The difference between Dimension and Dimensional formula is almost same as say velocity and formula for finding velocity in certain situations.

What is Dimension ?

any of a set of basic kinds of quantity, as mass, length, and time, in terms of which all other kinds of quantity can be expressed; usually denoted by capital letters, with appropriate exponents, placed in brackets:

The dimensions of velocity are [LT−1]. if somebody adds mass then M^0

one can write Dim(v) = [v] = [ M^0 L T^-1]

actually we have written the formula for velocity

The formulae or expressions that indicate how and which fundamental quantities are there in a physical quantity are called as the Dimensional Formula of the Physical Quantity.

Let’s assume that there is a physical quantity X that depends on base dimensions M (Mass), L (Length) and T (Time) with respective powers a, b and c, then its dimensional formula can be written as:

[M^aL^bT^c]

Dimensional formulae are helpful in finding units from one system to another. They have numerous real-life applications and form the basic aspect of units and measurements.

the physical equations/relations when written dimensionally will lead to a check whether a formula is correct or not.

hope it helps you
