1)When the vapour of the alcohols is passed over finely-divided copper seated to 300°, primary alcohols are decomposed into hydrogen and aldehydes, secondary alcohols give hydrogen and ketones, and tertiary alcohols yield water and unsaturated hydrocarbons.

2)Primary alcohols can be oxidized to form aldehydes and carboxylic acids; secondary alcohols can be oxidized to give ketones. Tertiary alcohols, in contrast, cannot be oxidized without breaking the molecule's C–C bonds.
