Dipawali/Diwali festival is celebrated in India every year in the month of October or November (as per Hindu calendar it is being celebrated in Kartik mash). Houses are decorated by repainting walls, purchasing new items and lighting of lamps. The word 'Diwali' means rows of lighted lamps. It is a festival of lights and Hindus celebrate it with joy. Diwali festival starts with Dhanterash and ends with Lakshmi Puja (on the occasion of Diwali), Govardhan Pooja and Bhaiya dooj.
On this day people make rangolis, decorate their houses with flowers, light up their houses with diyas, candles and lights. The ritual of worshiping Goddess Lakshmi and Ganesha is followed in every Hindu household on the occasion of Diwali. The preparations for celebration of Diwali begins one month earlier for cleaning and decorating houses. 20 days before Diwali, Dussehra is being celebrated for defeating of Ravana by Lord Sriram. Ramlila is being conducted at many places for celebration of Dussehra.
