Five characteristics of the Ganga river system are:

1. The river Ganga has two head streams called- the Bhagirathi and the Alaknanda. The headstream Bhagirathi is fed by the Gangotri glacier. The two headstreams meet at Devaprayag in Uttarakhand to form the Ganga.

2. The Ganga is joined by many tributaries from the Himalayas, a few of them being major rivers such as the Yamuna, the Ghaghara, the Gandak and the Kosi. The main tributaries, which come from the peninsular uplands, are the Chambal, the Betwa and the Son.

3. The Ganga flows eastwards till Farakka in West Bengal and bifurcates into two branches. One is the Bhagirathi-Hooghly (a distributary) that flows southwards through the deltaic plains to the Bay of Bengal and the mainstream flows southwards into Bangladesh.

4. The length of the Ganga is over 2500 km. It forms dendritic drainage pattern.

5. The river Ganga has the largest drainage basin in India, covering an area of about 8.6 lakh sq. km and spreading across 10 states of India .
